Sticks into Customized Sticks
Starter sticks get customized treatment by the table saw, the router, and for the first time this year, a new piece of wood – a dowel rod – is glued in.
CREATIVE CUTS
He customizes each stick with several to many passes through the table saw or router.
Here’s the first creative cut being made on a stick:
SECOND CREATIVE CUT
For the second creative cut, he used a different saw blade, one that cuts a triangular shape. This blade wasn’t sharp and produced a lot of smoke, which I had a good time recording against the dark outside.
THIRD AND FOURTH CREATIVE CUTS
The third and fourth creative cuts were done on the router with a circular bit to get a circular shape.
One of the cuts was to create a half circle that would join up with another stick’s half circle to produce — YESSS — a full circle! You can find six of them in this year’s snowflake. Celebrate this lively wood when you see some that don’t quite match up.
The other cut was to accept a wooden dowel – the first time he’s added wood to the original board sticks.
LAST CREATIVE CUT
SANDING IN PREP FOR GLUING DOWELS
The channel to hold the dowel came out fuzzy and needed to be sanded to ensure the two surfaces would connect and the glue would work.
